Volgograd State Panoramic Museum “Stalingrad Battle” has lead its life from the Museum of Defense of Tsaritsyn named after Stalyn, and it was opened on the 3rd of January of 1937. In 1948 it was renamed in Museum of Defense of Tsaritsyn-Stalingrad, in 1963-1982 it became Volgograd State Defense Museum, and in 31 of May of 1982 it turned out to be Volgograd State Panoramic Museum “Stalingrad Battle”.

The composition of museum consists of the artistic panorama “The Defeat of Fascists Armies at Stalingrad” (the biggest pictorial canvas of Russia, the size of it is 16x120 m, square – 2000 sq.m. and 1000sq.m. of objective plan) and of the museum “Stalingrad Battle”, where there are 8 exhibition halls with more than 3500 exhibits, four dioramas (sized 5x25 m each), a unique portrait gallery of Soviet military leaders and commanders, who were taking part in Stalingrad battle. Museum funds contain more than 126 thousands of storage units of local, state and world importance. The funds are composed of unique collections of cold steel and fire-arms, materiel , documents, photographs, banners, posters and art works. Main square of the storage is 10463,0 sq.m, exhibition square of the panoramic museum is 4500 sq.m, storage funds square is 645 sq.m. The most famous exhibits of museum:

• - honored sword - the present of King George VI to the citizens of Stalingrad, delivered to I. Stalyn at Tegeran conference in 1943;
• - overcoat of General V.A. Glazkov with 168 bullet and fragmental holes;
• - tunic of Marshall of Soviet Union G. Zhukov;
• - the table from the headquarters of the General M. Shumilov, where the General Field-Marshal F. Paulus, captioned in Stalingrad in 1943, was interrogated for the first time.;
• - 76 – mm cannon of the model “ZIS-3”, which went along with the battles from Stalingrad to Berlin and etc.

Since 1989 the museum has opened a constantly fulfilling exhibition of Afaganistan Hall. It exposes documents, honors and private possessions of the participants of the war actions in Afaganistan and Chechnya (in work since 1997), modern weapons and war machines.

Unique collections and museum exhibits were demonstrated at the exhibitions in England, France, Germany, Austria, Luxemburg, Czech Republic, Poland and Bulgaria. Since the 1937 the museum has been visited by more than 30 million people, including 16 million which has visited it during the period of work of panoramic museum “Stalingrad Battle”. Nowadays the museum and its branches are visited by more than 500 thousand people yearly.

Complex of panoramic museum “Stalingrad Battle” was created on the basis of the project of Volgograd architects under the guidance of the public architect of USSR V.Malyaev.
